Voting closes as Guatemalans choose new president after a tumultuous electoral season

Polling centers have closed in Guatemala and poll workers are beginning to tally ballots to determine hundreds of congressional and local races GUATEMALA CITY -- Polling centers closed and poll workers began tallying ballots across Guatemala on Sunday evening to determine hundreds of congressional and local races, but the big presidential field was expected only to be narrowed and require a runoff. While some isolated incidents reportedly interrupted the vote in some localities, voting appeared to have been orderly and peaceful in much of the country. Many Guatemalans expressed disappointment with their president ial choices after three opposition candidates were excluded by authorities. A large number of null ballots were expected, and experts said it could depress turnout. With none of the 22 president ial candidates polling near the required 50% threshold for winning outright, a second round of voting on Aug. 20 between the top two finishers was almost certain. At a polling place in...

Harris, Pence continue to differ one year after Dobbs

Image
Differences between Vice President Kamala Harris and her predecessor, former Vice President Mike Pence, take center stage one year after Roe v. Wade was overturned. Vice President Kamala Harris assailed a spate of laws restricting abortion in states across the country one year after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, as her predecessor openly embraces a federal ban. "Over the past 365 days, the women of our nation have suffered under the consequences of these laws," Harris said, addressing a crowd in downtown Charlotte, North Carolina, on Saturday. "Laws that in design and effect have created chaos, confusion, and fear. Laws that have denied women of our country care even when their life and Health were at risk." Weekly US applications for unemployment aid remain relatively elevated

The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits remained elevated last week, a possible sign that the Federal Reserve’s rate hikes are beginning to cool a still-strong labor market The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits remained relatively elevated last week, potentially another signal that Federal Reserve rate hikes are beginning to cool a surprisingly resilient labor market. U.S. applications for jobless claims were 264,000 for the week ending June 17, the same as the previous week's revised number, the Labor Department reported Thursday. That's slightly more than analysts were expecting. The claims numbers for the past two weeks are the highest since October of 2021. The four-week moving average of claims, which smooths out some of the week-to-week volatility, rose by 8,500 to 255,750. That’s the highest level since November of 2021. Jobless claims in the past three weeks have pushed closer to 300,000 after mostly being in the high 100,000 to ...

Arsenal's most expensive signings ever

Image
Despite embarking on a slow decline that culminated in outright toxicity following their Invincibles triumph and subsequent move to the Emirates in 2006, Arsenal still had the knack for snagging elite talent. The club's stadium switch tightened the purse strings for a while on the transfer front and the Gunners haven't been able to spend at a rate comparable to their contemporary rivals. Nevertheless, the Kroenkes aren't exactly strapped for cash and the club has frequently smashed its own transfer record since KSE took ownership in 2011. Here are the ten most expensive signings in Arsenal's history. 10. Shkodran Mustafi (£35m from Valencia) Mustafi had a pretty troubled spell in north London / Marc Atkins/GettyImages Shkodran Mustafi's time at Arsenal was troubled, although there were times he looked like a world beater. The German was a regular at the heart of the Gunners backline after joining for a pricey £35m from Valencia in 2016, with Arsene Wenger and Unai E...
